Make your own party hats Posted by Jo

As I mentioned, Mini Me has a birthday party coming up this weekend and we are going with the Birthday Monsters! theme. In the book, all of the characters are wearing party hats, so I thought it was “crucial” for Mini Me to have a special party hat of her own. I couldn’t find a store-bought version that I liked so I decided to make one. It was super simple and to make it even easier, we created a handy-dandy template for you.

Print the two-page template and cut both pieces out. Tape them together where indicated by the arrows. I wanted a tall party hat, and the template wouldn’t fit on one page, so that is why there are two parts! Next, lay your template on a piece of 12″x12″ card stock.

Trace around your template. I put mine in the very corner so that one side of the template ran along the edge of the paper. This saved paper and I didn’t have to try to cut a straight line down that side! You can use the extra paper to decorate a hat base that you make of a different color. Before you remove the template from the paper, use the tip of your scissors or an Xacto knife to cut the two tiny holes for your ribbon to go through. Then cut the hat out and fold down the flap on the right.

Once the flap is folded, put a piece of double-sided tape along the flap (or you could hot glue but I would burn myself too much.) Curve your paper into a cone shape and line up the bottom edges with the flap underneath then press the two edges together to adhere the tape.

Now, all you have to do is decorate your hat and add two pieces of ribbon to act as ties. I chose some fuzzy lime green ribbon and a big “2″ for my hat.

Mini Me was very happy to put on her special hat and model it for me but I am betting it won’t stay on too long during the party. Perhaps long enough to do the cake though!

Thank you so much. the other hats I found were too small since they tried to get the whole hat on one piece of paper. I cannot wait to try this.
