My sister-in-law needed a nightstand for her daughter's new room, and she asked me if I had any ideas. She loves a furniture makeover as much as I do, and we both quickly agreed that the wooden table Chica and I recently found at a yard sale would be the perfect piece.

Sure, it doesn't scream "little girl's room" yet, but I loved the waterfall front and new it could look amazing with some fresh new color and pattern.

The piece was a bit bulky, so I first lightened it up by removing the large bottom drawer, and replaced it with a piece of wood to create a shelf.

There were a few nicks in the laminate, which I filled with DAP Premium Wood Filler. Chica and I love this particular filler... it spreads like icing and is a delight to work with!

We also skim-coated the plywood shelf with wood filler to make sure we had a smooth finish. Once it was all dry, it just took a little sanding and it was ready to paint.

We started with a base coat of Rust-Oleum spray primer to seal in the wood tannins so they wouldn't seep through our final coat of paint. TIP: Paint furniture pieces upside down first, so you get all the hard-to-reach crevices, then flip it back over to paint the bulk of it.

When the primer was dry, I finished it off with a top coat of Rust-Oleum Moss Green.

For a fun accent, I painted the sides of the drawer with Americana Decor Outdoor Living in a peach color called Wildflower.

To really bring some bold pattern to the nightstand, I chose a pretty pattern from Rifle Paper Co.'s line of Wrapping Sheets called "Birch", which also inspired my paint color choices. I used Americana Decou-page to cover the shelf and the sides of the nightstand with the paper.

Since this nightstand will be in a kid's room, I added some extra protection to the paper and paint finish with two light coats of Americana Decor Light Satin Varnish.

As a final touch, I used a gold Chalkola Acrylic Paint Marker to quickly add metallic highlights to a few areas for just a hint of bling. I have used this same technique before on furniture and I really love how easy these markers make it to add great details. COUPON: get 10% off Chalkola markers on Amazon with code CHALKOLA10

I love how this little nightstand all came together. The finished shelf is going to be so much more functional than that big drawer was.

I added a new gold knob to the drawer and it was done. What a modern and chic new piece! We can hardly believe the transformation.
