Mahjong Party Planning: Set the Scene with Themed Decorations

The party banner

The party banner is one of my favorite elements and is key to setting the party mood. You can use our individual letter templates to build a banner saying anything, such as "Happy birthday", "Mahj and Margs" or "Merry Mahj-mas!"

Here's a bonus tip for hanging a banner: Rather than risk damaging the wall, I hung my banner from two of these purse display stands and set it right on the main party table.

House Rules

Every Mahjong crew might have different rules they go by, and the sign in our printables set is the perfect way to make your House Rules clear to guests. Just use the Canva template to customize the sign and put the printout in a standard 8x10 frame.

Hosting a Mahjong Tournament: Make It Fun and Fair

Your guests will enjoy the event much more if they are having fun and if the competition is fair. Here are some ideas for keeping the structure both simple and enjoyable.

Create a Mahjong tournament format by choosing between these options:

• Round Robin Style: Players switch tables after each round. Everyone plays with new partners, and points are tracked individually.
• Elimination Style: Players compete in multiple rounds, and the top scorers go to the “Championship Table” for the final round.

Suggested Format for 12 Players:

• 3 Tables of 4
• 4 Rounds (about 45–60 minutes each)
• Between rounds, players rotate tables/seats using a pre-set rotation chart

Keep scoring simple and friendly

American Mahjong scoring typically follows the NMJL point system (based on difficulty of hand completed). Print out these score cards to give to each player. You can simplify it for party play:

• Winning a hand: Points listed on the card
• Jokers used: Deduct 5 points per joker (optional)
• Dead hand: 0 points
• Bonus: +10 points for a "Jokerless Win"
• Bonus: +5 points for a win during the Charleston
