Horse Head Christmas Wreath - Get the Ralph Lauren Aesthetic

This year I wanted to add some horse-themed Christmas decorations to my home to embrace the Ralph Lauren aesthetic. I created a horse head wreath covered in faux greenery, and it was the perfect addition to my Ralph Lauren Christmas decorations.

As you'll see in our full tutorial video, creating this DIY horse head wreath is actually pretty easy, and can be done with scrap wood and inexpensive faux greenery garland.
If step-by-step instructions are more your style, keep reading to see exactly how we made this DIY horse head wreath that's a perfect addition to your Ralph Lauren inspired Christmas decor.
Step 1: Cut a horse head shape out of scrap wood
To create the horse head wreath, you'll need to start by sketching a horse head shape onto a piece of wood.
If you're not comfortable drawing the shape by hand, you may want to purchase our easy pattern that's 23" wide and 28" tall, the perfect size for this wreath.

Once you print the template, tape the pages together to create a large pattern and cut it out. (Check our our video above for details on how to match up the pages.)
Put the template onto a piece of scrap wood and trace it.
Then use a jigsaw to cut it out. Don't worry too much about the fine details, because the garland is going to cover up most of it.
Step 2: Paint the base green to hide gaps
The wood will eventually be covered in greenery, but to make sure that you no bits of unfinished wood peek through, give it a quick coat of green spray paint. This doesn't need to be perfect, just get some color down in case there are gaps in your garland.
Step 3: Cover the base with garland
Now it's time to cover the horse! Get some very small, soft garland with a low profile — nothing too full or stiff — and use a staple gun to attach it. Go back and forth across the shape until it is covered.
Step 4: Add a mane
To create the mane, look for some long-needle pine floral picks that will give the look of hair. Separate the clumps into individual pieces, and tuck them in along the horse's back. Overlap them as you work from bottom to top, securing with staples or hot glue if needed.
Step 5: Add a halter
For the perfect finishing touch that gives this horse some real personality, add a halter. Use a hot glue gun to attach red velvet ribbon in bands to create the halter.
Add a mini gold jingle bell wherever the ribbons intersect to not only hide the ends of the ribbon, but also add a sweet detail.

I love, love, love this horse wreath!!!!! How ingenious! First of all, I'm envious that you get to live on a horse farm. That has been my dream since I was a little girl. What a lovely colorful Christmas area you have created. I want to have coffee with you.

I used tiny pine cones for eye ! I made two each facing opposite ways ; we attach them during Christmas holiday too the Horse trail fence that borders are property in subdivision; one on each side of our driveway fence posts ! I used artificial greenery and glued down but if it rains I need to add new glue , maybe I’ll used the stapler next time !

I would replace the bridle red ribbon with a pastel-colored one and perhaps add a few flowers along the mane. That would be really cute!

Jackie, we do not have a pattern we can share. We just freehand drew it based on image we found online. Try doing a Google Image Search for "horse head silhouette" and you'll see plenty of good images to work from.
I love this horse head wreath, my granddaughter who lives with me has a horse and I wanted to make this for her but I couldn't get the pdf pattern to open. It kept telling me there was a threat. I would love to be able to get this. I love the shape of this horse and the ones I looked at didn't really have a nice shape. Is there any way you can tell me how to get your pattern? Also, can you give me the measurements for the horse head?
Ann, we just found a picture of a horse head online and used that as a model to draw it freehand onto the plywood. You can Google for horse head silhouettes and find one you like. We don't currently offer a pattern, so I'm not sure what PDF you clicked on (maybe it was in an ad?) but it wasn't from us. :) We will try to create a pattern soon from the original wreath if we can... check back in a few weeks to see if we've got it.
As for the measurements, you can make the wreath however big you like. Looking back at the photos in the post, I would guess ours was about 16-20" tall. Hope that helps!

I love this horse wreath and have made it a few times after watching your awesome video. I make it different every time I make it. I use the handles off of old purses to make my bridges and old jewelry instead of a bell but I did use red ribbon one time and added red lights behind the wreath to make it just glow a red color and I loved it as you will love yours when you make it to your liking. Thank you for the video because I had never even thought of making one of these until I watched it. I hope you have more to share. Have you ever made the cow head or the rooster.
