My friend needed some DIY floral centerpieces for a bridal shower she's throwing, and asked me if I had any unique ideas. We brainstormed a bit and came up with an idea that not only makes a fun summer centerpiece, but also doubles up as favors for the shower guests. And the key to it all was a fun technique I've been dying to try — hot glue gun texture art.

Add designs with hot glue

To start off, I found a bunch of 3" x 3" pine wooden cube boxes. We actually used some of those little planters that come with seeds and a peat pot, but you could easily glue together some boxes with scraps of craft wood.

Then I grabbed my trusty Arrow glue gun and started drawing designs right on the boxes.

I went for sets of concentric circles, randomly placed around the boxes, wrapping along the edges onto the other sides. "Drawing" with hot glue is pretty easy, and forgiving, too. Whenever I didn't like a line, I just peeled it off and did it again!

Paint the outside of the planters

When the glue was cooled, I grabbed some pretty colors of Americana acrylic paint and painted the boxes — glue and all — until they were completely covered. I added two coats to be sure I got good coverage on the glue areas.

Seal with varnish

To seal them, I gave a quick spray of gloss finish. Once that dried, the planters were ready for flowers.

Can you believe the cool texture? You'd never know that was just hot glue underneath!

We plan to make one of these for each guest at the shower, and group them together in the middle of the tables. After the party, everyone can take one as a favor.
