McGeeky loves Rice Krispies, so I decided to make him some special heart-shaped Rice Krispies treats for Valentine's Day. I decided to make them oversized and decorated to look like classic conversation hearts, with an extra marshmallow layer on top and cute messages written on them. They turned out so cute that I ended up making more for my daughters to take to school as treats for their Valentine's Day class party.

To start off, I made a pan of Rice Krispies treats, but I used a pan twice as big as normal so the treats would be thinner than usual — about 1" thick. Then I used a large, heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut the treats into hearts.

Then I made a big sheet of homemade marshmallows, about a half inch thick. You can find lots of homemade marshmallow recipes online, or you can take a shortcut and use pre-made giant marshmallow sheets. I used the same cookie cutter to create marshmallow hearts.

To make the marshmallows look like conversation hearts, I mixed a small amount of food coloring with some water and used that to paint the marshmallow hearts in pretty pastel colors.

To add the messages, I dipped a new, wet, flat paintbrush into some gel food coloring and painted on the letters. You can make custom messages or use the traditional conversation heart sayings.

I used some melted Wilton Candy Melts as a glue to attach one marshmallow topper to each Rice Krispies base. I happened to have some "funfetti" candy melts on hand, but you could use plain white or match the color of the heart on top.

Aren't they adorable? They are a fun and unexpected treat made from kid-approved components.

After giving McGeeky his fill of hearts, I tucked the rest into plastic baggies and let Mini Me take them to school for her class party. The kids loved them!
