Chalk Paint Hall Tree Makeover

I inherited a hall tree from my grandmother quite a few years ago. She told me she picked it up in Costco long ago, and while I never quite loved the oak finish, I definitely loved the size. With the marble shelf and little drawer and hooks, I knew it would be perfect near our front door. And thanks to Americana Decor Chalky Finish, there was no need to live with a piece of furniture that wasn't just right for me.
I chose a soft, cream color called Timeless to breathe new life into this hall tree. I poured the entire container into the reservoir of my HomeRight paint sprayer, added a little water to thin it, and stirred well to get a nice, even consistency.
I moved the piece outside, removed the hardware and marble, masked off the mirror, and cranked up the sprayer. I love how evenly the sprayer coats the wood, and the chalk paint goes on great with no surface prep needed.
To seal the paint, I used my go-to Americana Decor Soft Touch Varnish. It goes on so easily and I love the soft, smooth feel when it dries.
After it dried, I replaced the hardware and the marble tabletop and returned it to the entryway.
The marble looks so perfect with the cream, and I love the change this fresh color made.
But wouldn't you know it... after a couple of years I got tired of the cream color. We changed our living room walls from taupe to grey, and I wanted a new pop of color by the door. No problem — more Chalky Finish (this time in a navy blue called Honor) and my sprayer to the rescue!
With a fresh color and some new hooks, my hall tree had new life — again! This just goes to show you that you can makeover a makeover anytime. Don't hold yourself back from painting something again to get it the color you like for your current decor. It's always worth it for a piece you love.

I am wondering if you had to paint the varnish on or if you did that in the sprayer also?
Anneliese, use a brush to apply the varnish for best results.
I have the same halltree but can't decide on a color. My walls are a light grayish blue and the adjoining living room is beige. I'd love something to liven it up a little.
Any suggestions?
Kathy, maybe go with a taupe? That way it could bridge the gap between the grayish blue and the beige. Also, it gives you a nice, neutral background to add decorative elements each season.
I also have this exact hall tree, but I am unsure of which color to go with. My walls are a butternut color (sort of pale yellow w/ a hint of peach). Ideas/suggestions?
Teresa, I would advise trying to find it on a color wheel and then deciding if you want it to really pop against the wall color or you want it to blend in. If you want a pop, go for a color directly opposite on the wheel which would most likely be violet or blue violet. A shade of yellow green or orange would work well to blend it in. Make sure it is the same hue value and you can't go wrong! That means, look at where it falls on a color swatch and go with something that is the same lightness or darkness. Without really seeing the color, that's the best I can do to help!
How much would one of these sell for painted like this?

I have an almost identical hall tree (no marble) and want to redo it. Did you sand it before painting? Also, I’m going for a dark colour (charcoal) I was thinking of going with silver hardware. Do you have any experience spraying gold to silver? Great job on this piece. How has it held up?

Deb, I did not sand before painting. The Chalky Finish paint adheres great to almost any surface, so it was super easy to do. I have spray-painted hardware before to change the color, but sometimes it doesn't work well if it will get handled a lot, as the new paint might wear off. I usually prefer to upgrade knobs and pulls anyway, to give the piece a more modern touch.
I love this piece and have been looking for this size for quite a while. Do you know if they are still at Costco?
