All outdoor rugs and door mats fade eventually, but they can be expensive to replace. But sometimes a functional rug can be freshened up with a little outdoor paint, and maybe you can get it to last another season before having to be replaced.

Our front door mat had seen better days, but was still functional. And the pebble-like texture was just screaming for some color.

I chose a paint great for outdoor projects, Americana Multi-Surface, in the colors School Bus (yellow), Lipstick (red), and Coastal Waters (blue). This paint sticks to just about anything, and after it cures, it is fine to be used outdoors.

I simply pounced the paint onto the raised stones that were built into the mat. I spread the colors out somewhat randomly, but I used the red color the most because it matches my front door.

I think saying this is a HUGE improvement is an understatement! I am not sure how long the paint will withstand having shoes wiped on it, but it has been a couple weeks and so far it's holding up great. And if it doesn't, at least I extended the mat's life for a little longer.

I noticed a few months ago that my mom's front door mat is worn away like yours .. . I was going to look for a replacement, but she didn't want that. Maybe I'll suggest repainting!

When I saw this project, I was so happy. Promptly went out to the trash can and quickly retrieved the mat I just threw away, bought some paints and redid it yesterday. It was a little different than yours as it has a Welcome in the center. I used pink, turquoise and purple, to match the flowers out front. It looks so nice and really spiffed up the front door... Thanks so much for this great idea!

...I was just about ready to throw away my mat! It will now live on to see another day...

BTW: I am tickled that you are asking us to join you on your "ride" rather than "join you on your journey." I can't tell you how many bloggers use the journey motif. As a teacher of writing I am thrilled.

Maureen, it's actually holding up rather well! I will need to paint it again for next year but I have been very impressed!

I just saw this, years later, but had to tell you how much I love what you did with the mat. The colors are great! Looks like it came from a high end store! Thank you for sharing.
