What to consider when choosing a freestanding whirlpool tub

CAN A FREESTANDING TUB BE JETTED?

Freestanding tubs can definitely be jetted, but keep in mind that adding the whirlpool feature means the addition of a pump and piping to create the flow. To get all this to fit inside the tub's skirt so it's hidden, you'll find the sides are generally thicker than a non-jetted tub. There are plenty of freestanding whirlpool tubs out there to choose from that have all the equipment built-in and hidden from view. Read the details closely when considering an air jetted tub, as some on the market actually have the blower outside the tub, to be positioned in an adjoining room and connected with a hose, making them more challenging to install.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A JETTED TUB AND A WHIRLPOOL TUB

The simple difference between air jetted tubs and a whirlpool tub is that jetted tubs shoot jets of air and whirlpool tubs use jets of water. Air jetted tubs use a blower that pushes air into the water to create thousands of small bubbles. These bubbles can feel comforting and soothing, but don't provide much of a massage experience. Whirlpool and Jacuzzi tubs recirculate the water inside your tub with a pump that pushes the water out through strategically positioned massage jets. These water jets can provide a therapeutic massage in a whirlpool bathtub. Each has its pros and cons, but for the purpose of this list, I will focus on whirlpool tubs with water jets that provide the classic high-pressure, deep massage.

TUB SIZE AND CAPACITY

Aesthetics and features aside, don't forget to carefully consider the size and capacity of your whirlpool tub. You not only need to measure carefully to be sure you get a tub that will fit in the space, you need to also consider the drain location and plumbing changes that might have to be done in order for the tub's drain to line up properly.

Capacity must also be carefully considered, as a whirlpool tub can be quite heavy — and even more so when filled with water. A large tub will provide space for soaking with a partner, but also will increase water heating and usage costs. Finally, you should consider the total filled weight of the tub to be sure it fits within the structural load limits of the home. You may need to consult a contractor and/or reinforce the flooring to suit a large tub.

When looking at the capacity of potential tubs, take note of the length of the tub floor (how much leg room you'll have), the width of the tub floor (how much elbow room you'll have), and the depth to the overflow drain (how deep the water can get). All these measurements will greatly affect how comfortably you will fit (and how much of you is underwater) during your soak.

SHOULD YOU ADD AN IN-LINE HEATER?

For an even more luxurious bath, consider a whirlpool tub with a built-in heater. This will maintain the water temperature during your soak, meaning you don't have to constantly add more hot water as the water cools off. A built-in heat system can save on water usage and allow you a longer, more comfortable soak.

HOW TO DETERMINE WHIRLPOOL TUB QUALITY

When choosing your tub brand / manufacturer, it's important to consider how well the tub is built at the factory, but having a trustworthy inspection / finishing process can be far more important. Most consumer complaints result from a lack of proper identification of issues (leaks, scratches, etc) during the final assembly process at the manufacturer.

To ensure you get a quality tub, choose a manufacturer devoted to proper inspection and quality in the final build. Even if the parts are made overseas, you want the final assembly done in the USA by companies that build with careful quality control, provide excellent customer service, and ensure all electronics and bathtubs are UL listed (i.e. approved for use in the USA).

If you find a manufacturer that cares about quality and sells direct rather than with a dealer markup, you can find a great tub at a great price, and you'll be just as happy as I am with my tub (which I purchased from Baths of Distinction.)
