During a recent trip to IKEA, I stumbled upon these nicely-shaped wooden planters that just happened to jump into my cart! I wanted to add a bit of color so I decided to try out the new Americana Decor Color Stain. You can pick these stains up at select JoAnn stores, and you should check out the other cool new products in the Americana Decor family that they have in stock as well.

I wanted to leave part of the planter the natural bamboo, so I taped it off with some painter’s tape. Then, since there was a finish on the surface, I lightly sanded the area I wanted to stain, to remove the coating.

Do you like my color palette? It reminds me of 80s preps! Look at me, showing my age.

The stain is easy to apply with a regular brush. As you add more coats of the stain, it will become more and more opaque. I wanted it slightly translucent, so I only did two coats.

The great thing about the Americana Decor Color Stain is you don’t have to seal it with a varnish. These stains are self-sealing and can go outdoors. I love how my lavender looks in these planters!
