Months ago, I had asked McGeeky to cart this cabinet off somewhere. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like it so much, I was at a loss as to how it had come to be in our house in the first place. Had I actually picked it out and bought it? Was it a donation from somebody? I have no idea. I knew I just didn’t want it hanging around anymore. Then, I remembered how well my ottoman refresh with the chalk paint went and decided to give this cabinet one more chance. After all, I wanted it gone anyway, so adding some paint shouldn’t hurt it any if I messed up!

I started out with a coat of Treasure. Little Jo was pretty displeased when I told her that I would be painting over this layer later. She is a big fan of turquoise! You will see later that I compromised and left the inside of the piece Treasure. I went ahead and did two coats of this color.

The other two colors I had were Relic and Everlasting. The Relic was a tad too dark for me so I mixed in the Everlasting.

Yes, that is me mixing with a paper straw. Whatever is handy!

Then, I painted right on top of all the Treasure on the outside of the cabinet.

Once the second coat had dried, I distressed it. I wanted some of the Treasure to peek through from underneath, to give it a worn, shabby chic look. I distressed the edges with a baby wipe. Yep, a simple baby wipe and a small amount of pressure allowed me to remove the top coat without going through the bottom layer of paint. There are LOTS of techniques for distressing with chalk paint, so you can just play around and find one that works for you.

I am going to put this piece out on our covered deck, so I sealed it with a varnish rather than a wax.

I swapped out the handles with some I purchased and now I really like the cabinet! See how nice the Treasure looks from behind the wire doors?
