While sorting through a box of supplies in my craft room this weekend, I found a few 3″ Styrofoam balls and the thought occurred to me that they looked an awful lot like snowballs. I wanted to make them a little more realistic, though, so I grabbed a bag of polyester stuffing to add to it.
I stretched the stuffing out very thin and sort of dragged it along the Styrofoam. Because the surface of the Styrofoam is rough and scratchy, the stuffing actually caught on it and stuck pretty well on its own.
I only put enough stuffing on to just barely cover the ball, and kept it thin so that the Styrofoam’s naturally sparkly surface still showed through a little, which gave it a bit of an icy look underneath. Then I squeezed the ball and rolled it around in my hands to make the stuffing as smooth as possible.
It only took about a minute to cover each ball, and I think they look really cute.
I need to go buy some more Styrofoam balls so I can make more. I think they would look really pretty in a big bowl as a centerpiece, but for now I just put them in my Christmas tree!
