Project Runway home challenge (episode 7) Posted by Chica

Wow, am I up to the seventh garment already in my series of at-home challenge recreations to go along with Season 9 of Project Runway? Part of me can’t believe it, but then part of me remembers how much sewing I’ve been doing lately and then seven seems about right. I’m not sure how many episodes of the show there will be, actually… I’ll just keep going as long as I need to. Fortunately, I have immunity EVERY week and can’t get kicked off!

EPISODE 7: CAN’T WE JUST ALL GET ALONG?

This week’s challenge was a repeat from last season, but that was totally okay with me, because it was one of my favorites. The designers got to create their own design to be printed on fabric, and they used that to create their looks. As an extra twist, they were grouped into two teams of five, and had to coordinate their looks into a cohesive collection. For my at-home version, I didn’t have access to the amazing printing capabilities the designers did, so I had to improvise when creating my own fabric. I thought about designing on the computer and using iron-on transfer paper to make the print, but I was afraid it would make the fabric too stiff. To keep it simple, I just grabbed a black ball-point pen and drew my design directly onto white fabric.

Then I used my custom fabric to create a pair of wide pants. To go with it, I made a cute little brown top with scrunched sleeves and a wide, cowl-inspired neckline. I think the look is kinda casual but sophisticated at the same time.

For my analysis of the designers’ garments, I’ll start with the bad news so I can get it over with. I did not enjoy the collection put together by team Nuts and Bolts. From Burt’s too-long gear dress to Kimberly’s too-short skirt, things just weren’t working for them. Joshua’s jacket with the cog edge only made sense within the context of the theme of the collection, and just looks silly standing on its own. And as usual, he spent a lot of time freaking out and railroading Becky, whose thrice-sewn skirt didn’t give her outfit enough “oomph” to keep her from getting booted. I don’t think that environment was good for her anyway, so she should find some level of relief in being gone. But enough about them… I’d rather talk about team Chaos’ fantastic collection! Oh my goodness, I loved almost all of it. Anthony Ryan saved himself a little in my eyes with his sweet skirt and top, although I would’ve preferred something less goofy than that red bow at the neck. I wasn’t really fond of Bryce’s odd red top and shorts, but then Viktor made up for it with his stunning gown. How did he manage to make an ink blot look so good? And it’s as if Olivier heard my frustration with him last week, because he finally knocked out a tailored jacket that was something to be really proud of. The highlight for me was Anya’s unbelievably adorable dress. The second it hit the runway, I was in love. I want that dress! How I wish they’d sell it on Amazon like the maxi dress she designed a couple episodes ago. I was 100% behind the judges’ decision to choose her as the winner. I am loving her more and more each week.

P.S. I have finally figured out who Olivier’s model reminds me of. It’s Carla from Scrubs! That has been driving me crazy for weeks :)

Couldn’t agree more about “Nuts and Bolts!” How sad was that? I feel compelled to go on record that snotty as Josh was to Becky, it doesn’t take away from the fact that there was NO designing to her skirt. Something exciting or intriguing in design elements might have saved it from the poor fabric options, but it was just excruciatingly plain!
And LOVED the other group! My favorite was Viktor’s long Rorschach gown. I thought it was simply stunning. I didn’t see the appeal of Anya’s cocktail dress, nice but not a wow for me. But Viktor’s gown, oh, my yes! YES! I would love to have an occasion and place to wear it! Yumm!

Lizbeth, you can wear Viktor’s dress and I’ll wear Anya’s and we’ll have a night on the town! :)

Nicely done! I really like your outfit and you did a great job with the print. I’m still working on mine. BTW, have you ever heard of TAP? (transfer artist paper) GREAT product to use for image transfers without all that stiffness and weird texture you get from other products.

Thanks, Cyn! I had never heard of it before, but I just did a quick search on Transfer Artist Paper and it looks quite interesting! I might have to try that out. Thanks for the tip :)

Chica, since you started your Barbie projects I’ve been watching Project Runway more often. I hope you will continue your series of small fashions for their next year.

I’m sure the producers of the show would be very happy to hear that, Wanda! :) I’m glad you’re enjoying this series of posts.

I’m late this week. We traveled last weekend, and I had to find some time to watch the episode online. Anyhow, I love your fabric and the sweater. i think this an outfit I would actually wear. And you two can wear Anya’s and Viktor’s design and I’ll wear Anthony Ryan’s — that was my favorite, i think. The skirt was really well done. Oscar did a really good job on the jacket too. Poor Nuts and Bolts. I just knew they would get smashed for going too literal. But all in all, the clock theme was probably better than their take on the Village People. Can you imagine??? LOL

Haha, how did I forgot the Village People idea? It may have been crazy, but I sure would’ve liked to see it :)
