I absolutely love my iPhone, but I don’t love the fact that I can’t use it with gloves on. My fingers get far too cold in the winter to not have my gloves on when I’m outside or in the car, but wearing them means I can’t operate the phone! After a couple of months of seeing me try to answer the ringing phone with my nose or chin, my Honey decided to buy me a pair of touch screen gloves for Christmas. Unfortunately, he waited so long to buy them that all the stores at the mall were sold out! Great idea, Honey, but next time you need to shop earlier.

So I entered the new year with my regular old gloves and still operating the phone with my nose. Then one day I wondered if it were possible to make existing gloves touch screen compatible. My hands (and my nose) sang like angels when I found this tutorial for doing just that. All I needed was some conductive thread. (Available for purchase in our Amazon store!)

This thread has filaments in it that allow the magical electric impulses that come from your skin to flow through the thread (and through the glove) and reach the phone on the outside. All you need to do is sew a little bit of it into the fingertip of your glove.

As I threaded my needle, I was surprised at how soft and flexible this conductive thread is. I thought the metal might make it rough or scratchy, but it’s smooth as silk. I knotted the end of the thread and carefully guided the needle up into my favorite pair of Isotoners and fed it up through the finger. Then I started making stitches.

I put several stitches next to each other, creating a nice little smooth area on the fingertip of the glove. I made it look nice on the outside, which meant that the inside was a little sloppy, but that doesn’t matter. In fact, a sloppy inside is good, because it means more exposed thread. Remember that the thread must be able to touch your finger in order for it to properly transfer your electric impulses!

It was so easy to sew that little spot on my index finger that I decided to put one on my thumb as well, since I often use my thumb to answer a call. Having two working fingers also allows me to do pinch/pull actions on the screen.

So how does it work? Beautifully! I’m able to place calls and browse the Web with no problems at all. Texting is a little tricky, but that’s because I made my stitched area a little large. A smaller area of stitches would give finer control. I can’t believe how well it works and how easy it was to do.
