It’s almost that time of year again — time for us to host our annual chili cook-off! This is one of our favorite parties, mostly because we get to sample all of the yummy chili recipes! Two years ago (has it really been that long?) we showed you how we made our chili cook-off voting and sample boards. These have worked great the past two years, but they don’t look so great anymore. When I pulled them out this year, you could see signs of chili stains from years past — YUCK! Even though I washed them right after the parties, it still didn’t rid them of these stains. I had to do something about them for this year so as not to gross out myself and my guests! Here’s what they looked like before:
The fix was fairly simple. First, I took some black gloss acrylic paint and painted the front of the board. I debated between brushing the paint on or using spray paint, and decided on brushing because I didn’t want to risk getting spray paint on the the clip part. Then, I found a picture of a chili pepper I liked online and printed a bunch of them in different sizes. You could also use chili stickers
if you like. I arranged them across the board and then used a gloss Mod Podge
to adhere and seal the cut-outs to my boards.
I finish the board off by coating the entire front with a smooth coat of Mod Podge and then I painted the back of the board black.
I also removed the ribbons holding the pens to the boards and replaced them with new red ribbons. Don’t they look a lot better? And, with the coating of gloss Mod Podge, I will be able to easy wipe off any chili spills!
If you’re hosting a chili cook-off this fall, we’d love to hear all about it! We can’t wait for our party, and have already picked out a few awesome decorations. I got some festive chili pepper dishes for condiments like cheese and sour cream. We’ll be decorating the area with some pretty chili pepper garland and chili pepper confetti, and I know the kids are going to go crazy over the chili pinata!

You can use most of the same stuff and ideas for our chili cook-off party just replace everything with desserts! Good luck.

I learned a couple of good ideas today.
Thank you,
I am so stealing your chili cookoff idea. I’m planning ours for next month. I can’t wait. Thanks for the very informative website.
Wow…My club is doing our “FIRST” Chili cook off and your website was very informative..I passed your website around to all my committee members and this will definitely help us kick off a good chili contest.
Thanks a Bunch
So glad we could help, Sierra. Here’s to a cook-off so successful that you end up doing it every year!
Great info on the site. I’ve put together a few chili cook-offs but I love the idea of clip boards to hold 3 sample cups. Thanks for all the info. Great job!!!!
You’re website is great! You have wonderful, fun ideas and they will really help me. I’m planning two chili cook-offs (work and church) so your tools will be extremely helpful. Thank you for sharing them!
Always a great site to refer to. I used it last year for our 1st party and we are now getting ready for our 2nd Annual party. This year I’m going to make the clip boards!! So glad I caught your ‘update’.
Thanks!
