Organizing craft supplies Posted by Jo
August 20, 2010
Jo

As many of you know, I did a major reorganization of my craft room last winter.  I still can’t believe I worked in that dungeon, and I am still so happy with my new craft room space.  I even manage to keep it looking fairly close to the “after” picture you see in that previous post.  However, all things can stand improvement, and I have a little organizing tip to share with you today. (I’ll also have a much larger decorating idea for my peg board coming up soon!  I can’t wait to try it out and I can’t wait to share it!)

I had a small basket sitting on my working desk.  In it, I kept those tools that I use on an almost daily basis for my crafting, such as my ruler, Cutter Bee scissors, Scotch Adhesive Dot Roller, Scotch double sided tape (I swear, most of my crafts are held together with this stuff!), screwdriver, X-ACTO knife, pencil sharpener, and large scissors.  Really, all these items must be within reach at all times.

I noticed that my basket had swelled beyond these basic necessities, making it difficult for me to find them when I needed them.  Someone — I will blame Little Jo here — cluttered it up with other things like 10 different Sharpies, a hair elastic, a suction cup, a butter knife, 12 binder clips, a partially eaten granola bar, and many other weird items.  I had to do something about it.  Just look at this mess!

Bread_Box_Organization2I emptied out the basket and put the true essentials into a bread box that I was no longer using in the kitchen. I couldn’t bear to part with it because I love the color and the shape, but I didn’t know what to do with it.

Now it holds my supplies in a manner that makes them easy to see and reach and when I am not using them, I close the lid and everything looks so neat and tidy. This is a great idea to do with a specific craft you might be doing elsewhere in your home. Your family might keep opening the bread box on the counter expecting to find bread (Gasp!) in it, but instead they find your latest knitting project. But hey, that’s one of the trials and tribulations of living with a creative soul!

I recently stumbled on your website, and I must say that I LOVE all the things I have seen so far (and I’ve only been looking around it for an hour)… I am soo looking forward to being able to spend more time looking around, thank you.
