I made a fruit salad for a Memorial Day cookout and I added a little something extra. I liked it so much, I had my husband help me make it again so that I could take pictures for you! This version would be perfect to take as a Fourth of July side dish. After all, it incorporates stars and red and blue fruit. So perfect!
First, get some star shaped cookie cutters. Then, slice your watermelon to be about the same thickness as your cutter. You might have to use the blunt end of your knife or something else to push the cutter all the way down. Then, gently press the watermelon through.
Look at how cute the star-shaped fruit is! My husband is even cuter peeping out from behind his slice of watermelon! I cut stars out of all sizes and each one worked just fine. I can see this being fun using other simple shapes as well, like hearts or flowers.
I kept to my red and blue color scheme here but you could of course use whatever fruits are in season.

Brilliant idea – I’m going to use this for dessert for a casino theme party – but with hearts and diamond shapes, and with a dollop of whipped cream and gold edible glitter on top. Thanks so much for your idea!
Michelle, what a wonderful idea! We’d love to see a photo if you want to add one to our Flickr group.
