My husband’s birthday is coming up soon so Little Jo told me she wanted to make her daddy something. He works at an IT company so I thought something geek-inspired for his office would be a good idea. I’ve always wanted to try a craft with computer keys so this seemed like the perfect opportunity. Little Jo suggested we make him a backpack for his computer. That seemed a little more difficult than what I had originally planned, so I suggested a tissue box. Much easier!
We took our boring, wooden box and painted it with glossy black paint. Look at Little Jo go!
While Little Jo painted, I got a stack of old keyboards out of the closet and started popping the keys I needed off. Just so you know, my husband has tons of spare keyboards and I didn’t even put a dent in his ancient keyboard supply.
I thought the keys would be boring just sitting on the black background so I found some computer themed scrapbook paper in my stash that looks like old punch cards. I knew right away my husband would love a vintage computer themed tissue box. After we used Mod Podge to decoupage the paper to the box, I told Little Jo that I had to do the hot gluing. I seriously injure myself every time I hot glue something, and I didn’t want her to hurt herself. It’s rather sad but I must suffer for my art. Or, learn to not be so clumsy with a glue gun!
We used the keys to spell out different words on all four sides. The two sides I didn’t show you had my husband’s name and his company on them. I wouldn’t want you to hunt him down and steal his tissue box! : ) This would make a great project for Father’s Day for the tech inclined dad!

This is SO FANTASTIC! I need one!
Awesome craft! For those who don’t have a supply of old keyboards in the closet, check out thrift stores such as Goodwill. My local store always has a huge selection of old computer equipment, as well as gaming systems (you could make a Nintendo tissue box!)
That’s a great idea, Sandi! I bet eBay would be a good source, too.
Hilarious! My husband is in IT- this is on my “Stuff I’d Like to Make list right now!
I just finished making one for my (computer professional) husband for Christmas. My so-clever son suggested I spell out “anti virus hardware” on it! (Tee hee!) Thanks again for all the great ideas!
Pam, I love that! Give your son a high-five for me
