Great video tutorial!! Ruffles can be used in so many ways on your sewing projects. I linked to it on Craft Gossip Sewing:

Very clear and detailed video’s. I love them. Planning to buy a sewing machine and learn it.
Traditionally, you sew two rows of gathering stitches so there is less danger of the thread breaking as you gather. Depending on the weight of the fabric, that could become more important. For very heavy fabrics, I use a zig zag stitch over a cotton yarn, which works very well. It is important that you do not catch the yarn with a stitch or it will not pull.
My daughter’s prom dress last year had a TON of ruffles and gathered layers of heavy silk. This technique made it a lot easier.
Thanks so much for the feedback, Barb. I never thought of doing two rows of stitches, but I could see how that would help for heavier fabric or delicate ruffles. And that zigzag-over-yarn trick is crazy cool. Thanks for sharing!
hi,
I wanted to tell you the easiest way to create a ruffle on any sewing machine… after you move the stitch length to maximum(to baste), turn the tension dial to the highest it can go..then just sew and the machine creates the ruffles for you.
you can decrease the ruffle volume (the amount of ruffles) by decreasing the tension.
try it, it really works!
Thank you very much for posting these basic tutorials – I bought myself a sewing machine and started stitching once again. It’s been 15 years since I had some sewing lessons and made a few dresses. I thought I remembered it all, but your tutorials brought back a lot of basic tips – especially the one about holding the thread ends while starting to stitch and here I had been wondering why all my seams started in an ugly snarl
Once again, thank you very much. Looking forward to all your posts in this series…
