My ceiling needs help! Posted by Jo
February 26, 2010
Jo

Every night, I lie down in my bed and I look at this:

Ceiling_Help

I know, I should be happy that I have a roof over my head and food to eat, etc. and I am. However, I am tired of looking at this boring ceiling. It seems like there should be something I could do to spruce it up. I’ve tossed about a lot of ideas over the years but nothing has completely grabbed me yet and said, “THIS IS IT!” This has become a real sticking point for me today because I have been lying in bed sick all day staring at it and my Tivo’ed episodes of Project Runway. So, any suggestions? Anyone? One more thing, the green that is currently there is the color my room was a couple of years ago. It doesn’t even match the wine red and tan of the walls now. So very sad.

Definately some victorian ceiling tiles. Heres a website for some plastic tiles.

Or just browse the site and find one you like. You can order FREE samples of full size tiles to get a better glance. I think it would be fun, cheap, and lightweight/easy to install.

I ordered some free sample tiles to see what they are like… very neat. If you have the money, you can get some ceramic victorian tiles of the similar.

In some house Mark and I saw, they installed small led lights in the ceiling to give it a starry effect. The good news is was these lights were pin hole sized so unless they were on, you would not notice them.

I hope you start feeling better real soon. What does the rest of the room look like? Modern, vintage, western, etc?

I have always loved painting clouds and using glow in the dark paint to make little stars but now that Im older this has always caught my interest http://www.fiberoptix.com/products/star-ceilings.html

Back with another idea I just came across… cover the ceiling with red and tan shades designs of scrapbook paper. Check this link for the general idea… I love it.

I would paint the green to match the ceiling and remove the fan. I would then hang a chandelier from where the fan it. Not a large one but a med. size one. They look great in bedrooms.

You are so lucky to have those kind of ceilings! I love the inset ceilings like that. So pretty. Id put in recessed lighting first of all and a pretty chandelier right in the center would look really pretty. With the inset I would paint it a different color than the sides of it to make it pop too.

I would just paint the green strip white and put in a chic chandelier :)

What about a mural? Or a composition of large photos of family and friends (or all baby pictures of same). Or, get a couple of books of wallpaper samples and make an overlapping display of flowers or any designs you like. The possibilities are endless! Good luck!

I love the way your ceiling is indented. I don’t know how aggressive you want to be in re-doing your ceiling and how much patience and energy you have in bending backwards to paint or whatever to your ceiling but I have a suggestion that’s not too work intensive.

How about gluing a border on that ‘ledge’ ( I don’t know what else to call it..) That part that’s just before you get to the ceiling.
Most people put that border up next to the ceiling when they have a flat wall, but I thought it might look nice on that border that hangs down. Just a thought.

Thank you for all your wonderful ideas.

Hope you are feeling better soon Jo! No idea what your decorating style is, but there are ceiling medallions, both simple and decorative, or perhaps a change of blade design on your ceiling fan. Had a thought about stenciling a favorite saying or verse on the green dropdown section using current wall colors to “tie” this together. One more thing, check out this site,
http://www.wishihadthat.com, it has lots of ceiling designs, moldings, tiles, etc.

WE had the same ceiling at our old house. My sweet hubby added some crown molding at the bottom of the inside lip like a little gutter, then installed rope lighting (hidden by the decorative moulding) we could turn it on at night for ooo-la-la lighting and it was very pretty.

I also like a pale contrasting color for the inside or two contrasting colors in consecutive shades from a paint swatch painted in the same shape as the niche so it creates the optical illusion of it going higher up.

If this were my ceiling I would love a painting of clouds and sunshine maybe even some tree branches, but when the lights went out stars would glow from florescent paint that is not noticed on the day time picture.

If you were in No. Calif. I’d hop on over & throw up a mural, if you wanted.
Or, paint the green out with tan – to match your room – and do a color wash in the trey. I’d mix tan w/glaze and rub it on w/a t-shirt. Wouldn’t be like a mural, but would add some texture & interest.

I knew you guys would have some great ideas! I am trying to prevent myself from doing all of them on my one, poor ceiling. That would probably be a bit of overkill. I like the idea of using ceiling tiles. I am even thinking of doing a custom image from the link that Connie shared. I need to go through my pictures and see what I have. I will post an after shot as soon as I have a new ceiling!
