Feature Friday – Rose-covered lamp shade Posted by Jo
February 12, 2010

You may remember our good friend, Jenny, who previously shared her idea with us about organizing dress-up clothes. She recently finished another project that I absolutely love! She covered a plain lampshade with silk roses, transforming it into a gorgeous lamp for her little girl’s room. You know how much I love decorating lampshades (remember this one and this one?), so of course I found this one to be divine!

Jenny says that the process was simple, as long as you start with the right supplies. She said to use a cheap, plastic lamp shade in a very simple shape. For the roses, she recommends buying them in bulk, and found the best prices at this eBay store, where you can get lots of roses very inexpensively. Just trim the stems off the roses, as close as you dare, and use a hot glue gun to attach them to the shade. What an amazing result she got!

This is really pretty. A question, when the light bulb and shade get warm will the glue soften? Could the roses start falling off?

Hi Stefani! I suppose it is a possibility, although I’ve had the shade in my daughter’s room for a couple of months now, and that hasn’t happened. A couple things that can help prevent that are: 1) choose a fairly large barrel-shaped shade. It’s easier to work with and keeps the bulb farther away from the shade. 2) Use a CFL bulb – they put out a LOT less heat, so further reduces any risk. I use a daylight CFL in my daughter’s room so that the white color of the roses is even more vibrant!

ruth, I think Jenny used about 60-70 roses for her lampshade, but how many you need will depend on the size of your roses and the size of your shade.

Did you use white roses or cream/off-white roses? It is beautiful!

Laura, these were white roses, but this technique could easily be done with any color :)

This is sooo cute, i would love to do this but i dont have room for a lamp, do you think this would look nice as a border on a mirror?

I just checked the flower prices. You’re right, they are extremely reasonable still today! Just wanted people to know. Also they have a vast variety of colors and flower types to choose from.

Beverly, roses can be expensive but if you search around you can find good deals. We have a link in the tutorial above to a store on eBay where we were able to find good prices. Hopefully that helps!

Which roses do you get? Did you get the offer for 72 roses at 29.85? They come in bouquets of 6?

This is exactly what I wanted to do with my daughters lamp shade so thanks for sharing! It turned out great!

    Thanks!
