Keep lettuce fresh longer Posted by Jo

My husband loves lettuce.  In particular, he seems to love having iceberg lettuce in the refrigerator at all times.  I have no idea why.  He gets really mad when the lettuce spoils before he can eat it all.  He really hates wasted food.  As a gag gift for Christmas, I decided to buy him a Progressive International Lettuce Keeper. Sounds very impressive, doesn’t it?  I even bought him a lettuce knife to go with it to make the gift complete.  We’ve been using it since Christmas and the joke is on us. This thing actually works!  I haven’t had to throw out any lettuce since buying it.

This device is good for more than just lettuce, but we have only tried it out on lettuce.  There are instructions on the side of it to tell you whether or not to add water and whether or not to open the vent depending on which type of vegetable you insert.  Very handy.  It also has a removable divider in it so you can put two different vegetables in there at the same time.  In one side, I put my washed bagged lettuce and in the other side, he puts his boring iceberg.  I am not sure why I feel it necessary to prevent our lettuces from touching but I do it anyway.

So, if you find yourself tossing lettuce in the trash instead of in your salad bowl, I highly recommend this product. Now, I am wondering how their onion keeper works!

In the picture below, the iceberg lettuce has been in that thing for well over a week. It has a few brown spots but is still extremely crispy. My, more interesting lettuce, has been in a little less than a week and all the pieces are still crispy.

Progressive International did not pay for this endorsement by Chica and Jo, LLC. However, if they would like to send me a free onion keeper, I will happily tell them my opinions on it!

I have this, too, and the onion keeper and they are wonderful! The rubbermaid green containers are really good, too.

I would keep the icky iceberg from touching my mixed greens too. Definitely. :)

Thanks for the recommendation! One of my personal frustrations is the lettuce going bad before I can get to it all! (And I have long since quit buying iceberg; I favor romaine and the “spring mix” grouping of leaf letuces….) This is going onto my shopping list at BBB for this weekend. (Particularly since I stepped on the scale this morning and discovered that some time this week I put on 5! pounds. Definitely need to get on the “salad for lunch” schedule….)

I just ordered the berry keeper. I will let you all know how that one works out. PatGLex, I know how you feel about those pesky five pounds!

Wow I am a total lettuce waster. I have never heard of this until now. I am fixing to order this. I expected it to be expensive. So suprised it was less than 12 bucks with free shipping.
