Marshmallow snowman treats Posted by Jo

Do you remember my chocolate covered marshmallow treats?  Little Jo and her friends love them so much I decided to try and come up with a version to serve at our Christmas party next week.  I found some red and white crazy straws and went from there!  Snowmen seemed a logical choice, seeing as marshmallows are already white and when I put two of them on the end of the straw, it already looked like a snowman.  However, chocolate must be involved so it was time to embellish the marshmallows on a stick!

Snowmen need eyes, mouth, coal buttons, a scarf, a carrot nose and of course, a top hat.  Everything but the top hat would be easily made piping chocolate onto the covered marshmallows.  For the hat, I had to come up with something that would fit proportionately on his head.  I went into my pantry and rooted through the cookies and candy.  I found some of my sugar-free Oreos that I thought just might work.  My husband doesn’t believe in sugar-free so that is why these cookies are actually still in the house!  And good thing too, they were a perfect fit.  I only used half of the cookie for each hat.  I scraped out the white filling with a knife. And yes, I ate the filling!  You can’t let that yumminess go to waste!

Next, I cut a marshmallow in half and “glued” it to the cookie with some chocolate. I placed the half marshmallow and half Oreo into a bowl of melted chocolate and covered the whole thing.

Transfer the chocolate-coated hats to some wax paper to harden.  I placed mine on a plate in the freezer to expedite the process.

Now you need to dip the marshmallows into your melted white chocolate.  To make the drying process for this easier, use a piece of foam to hold the dipped marshmallows upright.  I used a piece of block foam that had come in a delivered package.  Next, place the top hat on top of the marshmallow head.  The still-melted white chocolate will act as a glue to attach the hat.

After your white chocolate hardens, go ahead and pipe on the noses, eyes, and mouths.  I simply placed the chocolate in a regular zipper bag and snipped a tiny hole in the corner.  For the scarves, I used a #18 star tip and decorator bag.

Little Jo loves these so I will definitely be making more for next week’s party!

These are so cute – I love them! I’m definitely going to try them. I’m wondering, though – do you think fruit roll-ups would work for the scarf (not sure about my artistic ability to pipe it myself)?

Diane, what a cute idea for the scarf. Just use a little melted white chocolate as the glue to hold it onto the snowman. Would love to see pictures of them when you are done, please add them to our Flikr group or email them to me!

Use Twizlers the pull apart kind for the scarf. And orange tic tac for the nose.

Jenn, the TicTac idea is brilliant! Thanks for sharing it with us.

I wonder if a candy-cane stick or pretzel stick would work in place of the crazy straws???

Lori, I think the candy cane stick would work just fine. If you get the large marshmallows, you could use the pretzel rods. It would be neat to add a marshmallow to the end of a candy cane with half of it dipped and you could use it as a hot chocolate stirrer!
