May’s comment was randomly selected as the winner from all the comments left here and on our Facebook page. May, your book is going in the mail right away. Everyone else, stay tuned to our site for more giveaways coming soon!

I love flipping through a book that is full of inspirational images. I like seeing ordinary objects through the eyes of an artist. When I first picked up the book, Who’s Your DADA?: Redefining the Doll through Mixed Media (Quarry), I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. Who's your DadaHeck, I wasn’t even sure what it was!  Of course, this only intrigued me to look a little closer and think outside of the box.  I am used to dolls like those my daughter has.  Pretty hair, pink dresses, ruffles, rosy cheeks. You know, the standard doll.  I never really considered that a doll could be made up of other objects.  Objects that wouldn’t necessarily be first on your list of doll-making materials, such as an aluminum can.

Authors Linda and Opie O’Brien take you into a different world of doll making.  They give you step-by-step instructions for making your own mixed-media dolls.  I like the layering effect achieved by using the different materials to compose the doll.  I am inspired to make a doll scrapbook.  I can see the book being the main body with found objects acting as the head and limbs.  The images in the book also inspired some ideas for making interesting shadow boxes.  With the cooking image on the bottom, in particular, I thought about making a shadow box display for my kitchen.  This display could include some of my favorite recipes, some retro advertisements for appliances, a spice jar and perhaps a utensil or two!

Take a moment to flip through this book a few times. It took me three times to really see the potential and appreciate the whimsy behind the lovely creations. It started a whole new way of thinking and creating for me that I hope to carry over into my other projects now. You never know from where inspiration will come!

Now I know what to do with a few of the Barbie accessories from my 28 and 24 year old daughters that I still have around!

There is something fun about collecting random items and making something neat out of – well, what other people would see as junk. It makes it hard for me to get rid of anything! This looks like a cool book.

This looks like a great book. I’ve been keeping lots of bits of various finds & haven’t been sure what to do with them. This book looks like it would give my imagination a good kick where it counts. Thanks for sharing the info about it. Have a great Halloween.

I want this! We just started collecting stuff for my 12 year old to begin building his own sculptures. This would be great inspiration for him.
