Use peg board and PVC pipe to organize dress-up clothes Posted by Jo

Some friends of ours recently finished off part of their basement as a playroom for their two kids.  Like most kids, theirs really like to play dress-up and they have accumulated quite the collection of costumes and accessories over the years.  Organizing all of them can be quite a challenge.  A while ago, we had a guest post that showed us how to convert a bookcase to a wardrobe for hanging the clothes.  This is a great idea, especially if you don’t have all the basement space our friends have.  But if you do have the space…this peg board treatment works great for hanging all of the accessories.

Notice how they used a plain shoe organizer to hold all of the smaller accessories like gloves, shoes, etc. Hats hang from individual pegs and the assortment of purses hang together on a set of hooks. The final touch is the full-length mirror hung so that the kids can see how great they look all dressed up!

Now, where are the costumes themselves?

They suspended a long piece of PVC pipe from the ceiling to act as a clothing rod. It is hung at just the right height so the kids can easily access the hangers. When picking out the pipe, make sure you take a hanger with you to the store to get the correct diameter. You wouldn’t want to get your pipe home and realize it is too big to actually hang anything! They used thick nylon strapping to secure the pipe to the beams in their ceiling. This was especially easy to do since their beams were still exposed.

I love this simple and efficient solution to organizing a play area. It keeps all of the dress-up clothes easily accessible and neat looking without costing a fortune!
