Refurbishing a dresser into a Moroccan style Posted by Jo

For my daughter’s room, I painted a headboard and a desk to match her brightly colored new bedroom.  I had so much fun painting those pieces that I decided to do a dresser for our new guest room as well.  The dresser in question is a nice size and sturdy and we already owned it so it was perfect for this project.  The finish had seen better days however and I wanted to integrate it into the Moroccan colors I chose for the guest room.

First, I sanded the surfaces I wanted to paint with my dad’s orbital sander.  Very handy little tool!  I wiped the surfaces down with tack cloth and then I was ready for the paint.

I decided on some spray paint colors.  I used Rustoleum hammered brown and Rustoleum Gloss Cobalt Blue to do the drawer faces, handles and the top.

After the spray paint had dried, I picked some acrylic paint colors to do the detail work.  I went with a yellow-gold and a purple.  I used a stencil to put the design on the top and the middle of the drawer fronts.  I did notice that after I painted on the smooth finish of the spray paint, the colors ran a bit underneath my stencil.  I liked the look to a certain degree because it gave it an aged quality but I wasn’t completely satisfied with it.  I decided to use a gold marker pen to outline the design — perfect!  Sometimes, a mistake turns out to be the first step to a great idea.

Once I had painted the drawer fronts and the top, I realized that I didn’t want to paint the body of the dresser, I liked the look of the original wood finish against the painted parts.  Now, I am off to see what other furniture pieces I can attack with my cans of spray paint!

The dresser looks great. It’s really good to see the old furniture being refurbished instead of replaced. They don’t make things like they used to.
I’ve got a couple of pieces from the Hinkle’s also that could use your ideas. Remind me the next time you come over. Let me know the colors for that afghan you mentioned.

That looks absolutely amazing. I will be doing the same thing to a dresser and looked it up and yours came up. I will be using different colors but I am glad I saw yours. It is beautiful and serves as an excellent example. Thank you :)

Oh, it is lovely! I have been to Morrocco twice now and come back with various painted items and now will surely try to do one myself. Thanks so much for sharing.

Lis, I would love to go to Morocco! It seems like it would be such an inspirational place to go.
