Use a spice rack as a curio display Posted by Jo

My grandmother has a guest bathroom decorated with various items from trips to the beach and the local flea market. As I was helping my daughter wash her hands before dinner the other evening, I noticed an seashell displayadorable shelf on her wall that she was using to hold some of her nicer seashell finds.

As you know, I am always on the lookout for ways to display my vast seashell collection so I was thrilled at this cute display. She told me that all it was was an inexpensive honeycomb spice rack she hung on the wall. The honeycomb shape makes it perfect for displaying small collectibles. I might put one in my daughter’s room to hold all of the rocks and other treasures she collects. This would also be great to hold a golf ball collection, small bits and pieces in the craft room or for displaying vintage sewing accessories.

I would like to know WHERE to find the honeycomb spice rack in your picture. Can’t find one. Janet

    Here’s a modern one I found on etsy: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=13800882
My grandmother picked this one up at a yard sale. I think they were popular during the 70’s so frequent searches on eBay, yard sales and the thrift shops might turn one up. I had no idea they would be this difficult to find when I posted! Perhaps Chica and I will come up with a way to easily make your own.

We bought a home with a built in wine rack and we do not drink. So, I was looking at your idea of the Honeycomb rack as something I could do with our non-wine rack. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Hi David! It’s certainly a challenge to find a use for a wine rack other than storing wine, but I have a few ideas for you.

    • What about using it to store pretty dishtowels? You can roll them up and stick them in the spaces. If you coordinate the colors well, it can look very pretty.
    • You could also store cooking magazines or soft-cover recipe books in the rack, rolled up a little.
    • If you shop carefully, you should be able to find some tall, skinny pasta containers like these stainless steel ones that would fit in the slots. You can fill them with pasta, flour, sugar, etc.

Good luck and let us know what you end up doing. If we come up with any more ideas, we’ll let you know!
