Over the weekend, I went to the 50th birthday party of a co-worker hosted at her mother’s neighborhood clubhouse. When it came time to purchase her gift, I was stumped. She was turning 50 so I wanted to get her something that reflected this milestone birthday but was also humorous and within my budget. Sometimes, it’s difficult to find something that will fit in nicely with other gag gifts or fit in nicely if the other party-goers got “real” presents instead.

So, I found a gift that was slightly humorous, functional and pretty all at the same time. First, I purchased a small apothecary jar. Then, I filled it with black M&M’s. The final touch was a 50 candle that I stuck in the middle. I wrapped it nicely and presented it to my co-worker at her party. She loved the jar, the candy and the small amount of age humor that went along with choosing the black M&M’s.

This would also be an appropriate gift to present at a wedding shower, as a hostess gift, a teacher appreciation present or as a token to the bereaved. Choose your M&M colors based on the occasion. The recipient can enjoy the candy and then use the beautiful apothecary jar to hold cotton balls, q-tips, coffee beans, sugar…the list could go on and on!
